Greene County sent a team of nine wrestlers to the ACGC Charger Invitational in Guthrie Center on Saturday. Freshman McKinley Robbins aced his way through the 106 lbs. bracket and was the lone Ram to not only win an individual title, but the only one to reach the finals. Robbins improved his record to 30-1 and  the second ranked Class 2A wrestler at that weight has won 26 matches in a row. He began the day with a first period fall in the quarterfinals, then a fall in the second period in the semifinals, before rolling to a 22-6 technical fall victory in the finals vs. junior John Schroder of Riverside (Oakland), a 2019 State qualifier and currently ranked ninth in Class 1A. Robbins was seeded second behind Schroder, but breezed to victory over the higher seeded opponent.

Junior Brady Stauffer (138) was seeded second and finished in third place after losing by fall in the semifinals. He went 4-1 on the day and is now 37-7 and leads the Rams in number of victories and matches wrestled. Junior Chance McCollum (126) and senior Will Hansen (160) each finished in fourth place. Sophomore Brenner Gallagher (113) and junior Sawyer Schiltz (220) both placed fifth with senior Braden Gallagher (120) sixth, senior Gage Michaelsen (195) seventh, and senior Matt Naberhaus (285) eighth.

The Rams were fifth in the team race among 16 squads. Clarion-Goldfield-Downs was first with 195 points followed by Van Meter/Earlham at 172. Manson-Northwest Webster had 150 with 122 for Woodward-Granger and 117.5 for the Rams. AHSTW (Avoca) was right behind Greene County at 115 points.

The regular season is over for Coach Zach Beekman’s team. They’ll next wrestle on Saturday, Feb. 8 in Class 2A Sectional 3 in Adel hosted by ADM. In addition to the Tigers and Rams, teams involved include Atlantic, Creston/Orient-Macksburg, Kuemper Catholic (Carroll), Panorama, and Winterset. Winterset won the Raccoon River Activities Conference title and C/O-M won the title in the Hawkeye 10 Conference. Every team has one or more wrestlers rated eighth or higher in Class 2A. The top two individuals in each weight class advance to District competition in Atlantic on Feb. 15. The top two teams move on to the Feb. 11 dual  meet regionals. The State Tournament is Feb. 20-21-22 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
