The final varsity basketball game scheduled to be played in the middle school gym in Jefferson is tonight. The 4-16 Greene County Rams host the 1-18 Saydel (Des Moines) Eagles in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference makeup action. The Rams beat the Eagles 54-44 one week ago at Saydel and will be looking for the two-game season sweep and a conference win at home, something that has eluded the Rams so far.

Greene County head coach Chris Nelson played in the early 2000’s for the Rams and he told Raccoon Valley Radio the gym is a special place for him. “It obviously holds a special place in my heart being a Jefferson-Scranton graduate. I played a lot of games in there from Youth basketball to Junior High basketball, and all the way through High School, and have a lot of good memories in that gym and had a lot of success in there.”

He added it’s special to coach where he played. “Obviously, getting to come back and coach here is special. I remember that first game coaching here was really special and really neat. It’s hard to believe this is going to be our last game. We want to go out with a bang and play as well as we can and send it home in a good way.”

Coverage of tonight’s varsity game starts around 7 p.m. on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
