State House District 20 Representative Ray Sorensen (R) says it’s unlikely that a bill will pass that requires Iowa school districts to notify parents when curriculum or classroom activities include content relating to sexual orientation or gender identity.

House File 2201 advanced in the House of Representatives last week, which would allow parents to opt out of having their children participate in any instruction or programs that pertain to gender identity. Supporters of the bill say this would be similar to how state law allows parents to opt their children out of human growth and development instruction. Sorensen comments on the measure which was introduced by 13 fellow Republican representatives, “I know where the concern’s coming from. There’s a very conservative part of our caucus that is very worried about the indoctrination happening in schools, and I believe that’s probably where that’s coming from but do I think it has any legs? I highly doubt it.”

The bill would also require school districts to provide information about the instruction and its procedures for inspecting and updating it to any agency or organization that requests it.
