Anglers can find some success in Guthrie County this weekend, while also keeping up with social distancing protocol.

Iowa Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Jeremy King says walleyes and crappies are steadily being caught on the Middle Raccoon River near the Redfield dam, “And then upstream on the river the catfish are really eating right now. So if you like catfishing, I tell you what, you pick a good day right now to go out weather-wise and you’re going to catch some catfish. Right now the guys who are doing really good are using shrimp that you can just get at the store and catch them on that. And then a few of them are catching them on nightcrawlers but chicken liver is the other hot thing.”

King reminds anglers that they can renew or purchase fishing licenses online or by using the Go Outdoors IA mobile app from the DNR. With Iowa’s current State of Emergency, King encourages the public to enjoy the outdoors, but stay close to home, keep groups to fewer than 10 people, and be mindful of keeping six feet of distance between you and others when determining your fishing spot.
