The public may have forgotten there are several pieces of legislation being considered in Iowa’s current general assembly that many consider controversial. However, the legislators themselves remember them, and some have plans to get them passed once the COVID-19 recess ends.

State Senator Jake Chapman, (R) District 10, says many of the high profile bills – such as the constitutional amendments related to gun ownership, abortion rights, and felon voting – are still being discussed in an unofficial capacity. Chapman feels that discussion during the interim is key to getting movement on them when the Legislature reconvenes. “So those bills are very much alive and active right now. Yes, I suspect that we will have a much shortened session when we come back in from our recess here. But there is a lot of conversation going on between the chambers, between leadership, and I don’t think anyone has given up on those big policy issues at all. So I am very optimistic those will still get done when we return.”

Other representatives are slightly more pessimistic about the controversial bills’ futures, including State Representative Chris Hagenow, (R) District 19, who believes the Legislature will likely focus on the budget and policy that has bipartisan support.
