Earlier this week, Activities Director with Dallas Center-Grimes Schools, Brent Buttjer met with Raccoon Valley Radio to talk about the current Covid-19 shutdown and how the situation has challenged coaches, teachers, and student-athletes alike.

But it wasn’t all gloom and doom from Buttjer’s point of view.  Following six years as AD at Ankeny, Buttjer said he missed the community spirit that smaller schools provide, which is why DC-G was so appealing to him.

Though DC-G is growing rapidly and is inching towards switching to 4A competition in athletics, the 230 average class size is manageable compared to the average class size of 1,000 in Ankeny, split between two high schools.

Buttjer mentioned the immense success that the Mustangs and Fillies have seen this school year.  Starting in the fall with top place finishes in Fort Dodge at State Cross Country, to programs just one win shy of a state tournament bid in Football, Volleyball, Boys’ and Girls’ basketball, and a strong showing at the State Wrestling Tournament in late February.

Additionally, DC-G had students compete at the State Tournament level with its sharing program with Johnston Schools in Boys’ and Girls’ Bowling, and Swimming and Diving.  Not to disclose the arts, from Drama, to Speech, and Music.

Buttjer is happy to be at Dallas Center-Grimes, and although the current stoppage in the school year has been tough, the year has been a tremendous success.
