The opening of a popular summer attraction for Dallas County residents is being delayed this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and there’s a possibility it may not open at all.

The Adel Family Aquatics Center typically opens the week after Memorial Day, just in time for the end of the school year. However, the Parks and Recreation Department announced recently the water park will not open on May 30th as scheduled. Governor Kim Reynolds has lifted some restrictions on swimming pools, but Adel Parks and Rec Director Nick Schenck has said they will err on the side of caution until the viral outbreak has been curbed in the County. Schenck noted at the recent City Council meeting, they may just open the pool for swim lessons and lap swim this summer. Regardless, he said they will fill and run the pool this year, just to ensure the system doesn’t lay dormant for too long.

As for the City parks, Schenck said they are each open for public use, though the shelters will remain closed through May 27th, and there’s no firm timeline for reopening the playgrounds and public restrooms. Additionally, the deadline to sign up for youth and adult summer athletic leagues has been extended to May 29th. That includes Little Sluggers baseball, youth and adult tennis, co-ed sand volleyball, and co-ed slow-pitch softball.
