Iowa high school baseball and softball practice begins on June 1 with the first games starting as soon as June 15. Normally, spring sports are still going on when practice for baseball and softball begins, so athletes in both spring and summer sports split their time.

This year is different with all Iowa high school spring sports being cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns, which means when practice begins baseball for boys and softball for girls will be the only school sports taking place. First year Greene County head baseball coach Matt Paulsen talked about that with Raccoon Valley Radio. “It’ll be two weeks of just baseball practice. Usually with track, golf, or soccer, kids are either arriving late because of those practices, or missing practice because of competitions in spring sports because that’s obviously their in-season sport and they have to finish that first.”

The coach added, “It’ll be nice having two weeks of just baseball. As unfortunate as it is for the spring sports, it’ll be nice for baseball to focus on baseball.”

KGRA will be broadcasting a number of baseball and softball games the Rams play in. Activities Director Todd Gordon is expected to release the abbreviated schedule this week. KG98 will release its broadcast schedule soon after receiving the schedules from the A.D. Gordon told Raccoon Valley Radio last week both baseball and softball would play only the 14 Heart of Iowa Activities Conference games with seven in Jefferson and seven on the road.
