An Indianola man died as the result of a single-vehicle wreck near Guthrie Center Saturday night.

According to the Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office, at about 10:58 p.m. 58-year-old Joseph Alton Heck was driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck north on Highway 25 just south of Monteith Road. He failed to observe an uphill left hand curve and drove straight onto the east shoulder, where he drove into the ditch for about 300 feet. Heck then crossed back onto the road for 100 feet, entered the west ditch, and rolled the truck multiple times until it came to rest another 200 feet north into the west ditch. Heck was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected through the driver’s side window. He sustained fatal injuries as a result of the ejection.

Heck was transported by Twigg Funeral Home to the state medical examiner’s office, and toxicology results are pending. The vehicle was totaled and about $100 in damage was estimated to a highway sign. No other occupants or vehicles were involved in the incident. Guthrie Center Fire Department, Panora Police Department, and Panora Emergency Medical Services assisted at the scene.
