Several of the action items at the most recent Perry City Council meeting involved the ongoing renovation project at the McCreary Community Building.

Among those were three change orders from Ball Team Construction, the contractors for the project, which brought the total number of change orders to nine since work began. Perry City Administrator Sven Peterson points out that given the age of the rec center and the scale of the project, having that many unexpected issues pop up during construction was expected, and he also feels they’ve all be necessary. Peterson also notes, each of the recent change orders had to do with ceiling work, including in the gym, kitchen, and swimming pool locker rooms.

It was the latter that resulted in the biggest expense. Peterson says there was extensive humidity damage to the locker room ceilings, and there was a choice given to either do a quick patch that would be a temporary fix, or a complete replacement that was more expensive. “Council decided it was best to repair the entire ceiling in both locker rooms. So from the entrance to the pool entrance, those locker room ceilings will be completely torn out and redone. This also includes new lighting in the locker rooms, as well as some work with HVAC where that comes into the locker rooms. So overall kind of more of a long term investment, so that’s great to see. The rec center’s not always gotten that, but we’re glad to be moving forward with that project and making a difference out there.”

As a result of approving each of the recent change orders, including the more expensive option for the locker room ceiling, the project has gone over its contingency budget. However, Peterson emphasizes that it’s still under budget from what was originally expected, because they got such a good price from the contractor to start out.
