The Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa High School Girls Athletic Union released guidelines for fall sports.

Last week the IHSAA announced that football regular season would be condensed to 5-7 games to limit travel and offer flexibility if a team can’t play because of COVID-19. Earlier this week more guidelines were announced to outline expectations for coaches and athletes for the upcoming season. The guidelines are similar to what was in place for baseball and softball during the summer season. Teams are to social distance when they can, limit shared equipment, and sanitize any shared spaces like locker rooms or training facilities after each use.

Adel-DeSoto-Minburn Activities Director Rod Wiebers tells Raccoon Valley Radio that he and the coaches are confident they can follow through with the guidelines based on the successful summer season, “Having a summer sports season has really prepared us to do a lot of the stuff that we hope to do to continue to be successful in the fall. The feedback has been very positive. With me being a brand new activities director, I can not express how happy I am to be a part of this community whose always been, ‘Hey how can I help? What are things we can do to support the things we have in place?’ They’ve been very positive about the changes and are just excited about their student-athletes having a chance to participate and do the things they love.”

Specific guidelines and expectations were announced for football, cross country, volleyball, and golf. Practices for fall sports can begin as soon as August 10th. You can hear more about the guidelines during Friday’s Perry Fareway Let’s Talk Dallas County program with Wiebers.
