The Perry City Council heard an update from a recently formed committee to review the city’s firework ordinance at their regular meeting Monday.

The committee consists of council members Barb Wolling and Randy McCaulley along with Police Chief Eric Vaughn to look into what the city can do regarding fireworks after seeing an increase in complaints from this past 4th of July holiday. City Administrator Sven Peterson tells Raccoon Valley Radio where they’re at in their work, “The Fireworks committee has met a time or two and really has just done some background work on what other towns do for fireworks and what they’re experiencing. This firework season a lot of communities dealt with the same kind of thing that we had; a lot of firework activity over the 4th of July holiday. So they’re going to continue to study that and they are seeking ideas and ideas from the community.” 

The Council also accepted a pair of grants, including one from the United States Economic Development Administration worth more than $1.2 million for critical roadway infrastructure improvements. This grant will be matched with $884,703 in state funds and $355,535 in local funds. The EDA hopes this will create or retain 160 jobs in Perry, while generating $2.8 million in private investment.
