There’s no question the 2020 Greene County High School football team has a number of positions to fill due to graduation from the 2019 squad that went 9-2 and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Class 2A playoffs. A look at the seven scheduled opponents for the 2020 regular season shows that many of those teams also have holes to fill.

Greene County opens the season on Aug. 28 at Dewey Field in Perry vs. the Blue Jays in the “Annual Battle for the Cowbell.” Perry is coming off an 0-9 season for the second straight year. Week two has Class 1A power South Central Calhoun visiting Linduska Field. The Titans were 10-1 last season and return several key players.

The Class 2A District 9 schedule begins with Atlantic, a 4-5 team a season ago. The Trojans lost some key players including a running back with the most rushing yards in that class. Des Moines Christian is the Homecoming opponent for the Rams in week three. The Lions are the team the Rams beat to open the 2019 playoffs and they went 8-2. DMC and Greene County lost a similar number of key players as both relied heavily last year on seniors. Week five means a trip to Red Oak. The Tigers were 0-9 and graduated most of their top players. Week six is the last home game as Clarinda visits Jefferson. The Cardinals went 5-4 as a Class 1A program in 2019 and return some key players. The regular season ends in Shenandoah. The Mustangs were 2-7 after going without a win in 2018. Shen should have a number of second and third year varsity players on the roster.
