Down power line near Jefferson Hy-Vee following Monday's storm.

Greene County law enforcement and local fire departments had a busy day following Monday’s storm.

Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams tells Raccoon Valley Radio during the storm, they responded to five vehicle crashes, none of which resulted in injuries. Following the storm, Williams says all available deputies and each of the volunteer fire departments in the county assisted their communities with using chainsaws to remove tree debris from the roads. Greene County Secondary Roads also worked nearly 1,000 miles of county roads clearing debris and removing tree limbs into the ditch areas.

Williams points out there were several small fires that happened across the county due to down power lines. Williams says if you see a down powerline not to approach it or try to get tree brush from it. He requests you call your power company to shut the electricity off to the powerline. Williams adds, the Jefferson Fire Department responded to seven such fires from 8pm Monday through 4:30am Tuesday. He says the fire department also provided portable generators for Jefferson residents that were on life supporting machines in their homes until power was restored.

Williams adds there were several reports of property damage across the county, including trees that went through rooftops and trees that had fallen on top of vehicles. However, only one person suffered serious injuries when they fell off a ladder trying to clear debris from a rooftop and no one was killed.

The Jefferson Police Department reports several businesses sustained severe damage from the storm. Officers responded to several areas where there were down power lines and trees blocking the streets until city crews cleared them of the debris.

Williams says if you have property damage, you must call your insurance company and not law enforcement. However, you can notify law enforcement if there is a suspected natural gas leak.
