Even though severe weather season might be winding down, there are still chances that storms could happen.

Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams says when a tornado warning is issued for the county, trained weather spotters are sent out.

“The fire departments for that respective area are paged out to go to different locations so they can observe a pretty wide area and pretty accurately observe that area. Then also the sheriff’s department – usually myself, the chief deputy and the duty cars – will start going out and follow the storm along until it’s out of the county.”

Williams points out the severe weather sirens are activated anytime there is sustained winds of 60-miles-per-hour or greater and if there is a radar-indicated or a weather spotter confirmed tornado. The sirens are then sounded for one cycle and there is no “all clear” signal given. Williams adds that authorized individuals who can activate the sirens include law enforcement or fire personnel, the emergency management coordinator, and the National Weather Service.
