The first round of applications for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is now available for the elderly and disabled.

Those households with elderly or disabled individuals can apply to receive funding to help pay for heating and energy costs during the winter months. New Opportunities Greene County Coordinator Teresa Lansman is scheduling appointments now. She says there are income guidelines for households to be aware of and the program is through April 30, 2021. Lansman recalls last year’s LIHEAP program was extended through part of the summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which served about 500 families in Greene County.

“The extra time did help tremendously for a lot of families that hadn’t used our program before. Even the utility company, Alliant (Energy) was amazing by calling families that had normally signed up, or telling families that were behind to contact us. So it was definitely a program that we all worked hand-in-hand trying to the families as much as possible.”

The elderly and disabled can apply for LIHEAP now and all other households can apply starting November 2nd. Contact Lansman at New Opportunities to schedule an appointment at 515-386-2719, or email at tlansman@newopp.org
