The 2020 high school football playoffs begin tonight.

The challenges of having a high school football season amid the COVID-19 pandemic prompted the Iowa High School Athletic Association to adjust their playoff football format. Every eligible team was assigned a postseason pod based on their regular-season record, final district standings, and geography. This way, each team can still compete for a state championship, even if they had to miss games or had a smaller team because of students in quarantine. After next week, each pod’s winners will be seeded and will begin the more traditional 16-team state championship playoffs.
