Heads up for Jefferson and surrounding residents: two amended ordinances will take effect starting tomorrow.

One ordinance is to reduce the speed limit on Grimmell Road from Lincoln Way to U.S. Highway 30 from 45 miles-per-hour to 35. At their most recent meeting last Tuesday, the City Council approved the second reading and waived the third reading to amend the ordinance. City Administrator Mike Palmer says the police committee recommended the change due to increased public safety concerns.

“Up until now, it’s been a fairly rural road. But now with the (Greene County High) school out there and the traffic, people can see considerable speed increases if they’re not paying attention. So hopefully, this will slow people down, since there’s a new school out there.”

Another amended ordinance that the Council passed last Tuesday was allowing off-road utility vehicles within City limits. The ordinance would allow for side-by-side UTV with no more than four seats and less than six seats, including a steering wheel for control. Palmer explains the intent for allowing off-road UTVs in town.

“The Council really wanted to make it more possible for, like if somebody from the farm (in the rural areas) wants to come in (to the City) and use one of their utility vehicles to come in and get a bale of hay, or get some feed, or something, they can do that. I know the (Greene County) school (District), they have one of these vehicles, and they can go back-and-forth between the school spots now, and do it legally.”
