The New Opportunities Guthrie County Family Development Center is encouraging the public to spread some generosity around with their annual giving tree program.

Coordinator Rhonda Huggins tells Raccoon Valley Radio that their giving tree display has been moved to their office located in Guthrie Center City Hall this year. The public can come in and grab a tag or more to make a child’s Christmas special. Huggins says the giving tree requests that she receives from clients often include basic necessities, “Maybe there’s a couple toy items and sometimes there isn’t, they just are asking for basic needs in a lot of cases. So hats and gloves, snow boots, socks, I had somebody say ‘Well, my child needs some socks,’ and that’s not something you would think you would see on somebody’s Christmas but those are the needs out there.”

Huggins asks for all items and corresponding tags to be dropped off at her office by December 2nd. She adds that county residents can still call her at 641-747-3845 to sign their children up for the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots program, which will then be distributed on December 4th.
