Greene County high school wrestlers have day one of practice today for the 2020-21 season. That’s nine days later than the majority of wrestling programs in the state, and it’s because the school district was on 100% virtual learning through yesterday. State rules don’t allow for any school activities when a district is on 100% virtual learning.

Head Coach Zach Beekman begins his third year as head coach of the Rams. Greene County went 23-6 in dual meets last year and although some holes in the lineup were created by graduation, a number of varsity veterans return. That list includes both 2020 State Tournament qualifiers in McKinley Robbins and Brenner Gallagher, among others.

Robbins is a sophomore who finished as the Class 2A State runner-up at 106 lbs. and went 27-2 with his only losses both coming to the State champion. He was the Ram wrestling program’s first state finalist since 1995 and the first Ram freshman to make the finals of a State Tournament. Gallagher is a junior who finished in the top 12 at 113 lbs. at State.

Coach Beekman expects close to 25 wrestlers to report for the first practice.
