The Greene County high school girls’ basketball team ended a long losing streak vs. PCM (Monroe) while the Mustangs continued their recent mastery over the Rams in boys’ basketball. Greene County hosted PCM last night in a Heart of Iowa Activities Conference doubleheader in the new high school gym in Jefferson with the Rams winning 34-27 in overtime in the girls’ game and PCM taking the boys’ contest by a 63-51 score. The games were broadcast on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.

Coach Todd Gordon’s girls stopped a string of 15 straight losses to the Mustangs that extended back to the 2012-13 season. The victory by the Rams was just their second in the last 27 games of the series, and it upped Greene County’s record to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference. The Mustangs fell to 0-7 and 0-2. The Rams led 12-6 early in the second quarter, but the advantage was just 14-13 at intermission. The game was tied 19-19 at the end of the third quarter and 25-25 when regulation play ended. The Mustangs missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw opportunity with 1.2 seconds left in the fourth quarter, got the offensive rebound, missed the shot, and the game went into OT.

The Rams had a 9-2 scoring advantage in the extra four minutes and went five of six shooting free throws from Emma Hoyle and Brianna Habben. Habben finished with a game-high 15 points and Hoyle had four, her first as a varsity player. Sadie Wilson scored eight points and she had both of the Rams baskets from three-point range. Greene County unofficially had 31 turnovers, but just two in OT. Paige Steenhoek had eight points for PCM and the Mustangs had 20 turnovers, but only 10 after the first quarter.

The PCM boys improved to 1-1 in league play and 1-4 overall while the Rams fell to 0-3 and 0-2. The win was the seventh straight in the series for the Mustangs. Both played shorthanded with the Mustangs going without Carson Vandelune and his 14 points per game, while Greene County was down starters Jesse Miller and Jackson Morton and three reserves. PCM led 17-4 after one quarter and 38-16 at the half. The Rams made 10 shots from three-point range, seven of those in the second half and got to within seven points in the fourth quarter, but could not get closer. Bryce Stalder scored 22 points, with Max Riley at 10 and eight each from Richard Daugherty and Zach Goff. PCM had 16 points by Grant Landgrebe and 15 apiece by Andrew Mitchell and Durant Van Dyke.

The Mustangs were 18 of 44 from the field unofficially and 17 of 32 shooting free throws. The Rams went 17 of 50 from the floor and seven of eight from the foul line.

The Rams play today in Perry on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. The girls start the twin bill at 2 p.m. with the boys to follow.
