The Electoral College in Iowa will get to vote for its presidential candidate Monday.

The Director of the McConnell Center at the University of Louisville in Kentucky Dr. Gary Gregg was a recent guest speaker at the Jefferson Rotary Club. Dr. Gregg has written and edited over a dozen books about the electoral college and presidential politics. He says Iowa’s six electors will get to vote for their presidential candidate, and then their responsibility is finished and they go back into their communities.

Gregg answered a question regarding the effectiveness of the Electoral College, instead of just having the popular vote, he believes it creates a more competitive presidential election.

“If you’re running a ‘I win one more vote than the next person,’ and you’re Joe Biden let’s say, you know you go to Los Angeles (California) you can win almost 2 million more votes than your opponent, why would you ever think about Iowa again? Why would Donald Trump or the Republicans ever think about Iowa again? Small states, like Iowa, aren’t important anymore.”

Gregg adds, the two main reasons for why the Electoral College was created was to pick the best person as president and to follow the logic of a constitutional republic, based on representation, deliberation, and separation of powers with checks and balances.
