The Guthrie County Farm Bureau is planning a comprehensive “Ag in the Classroom program” for elementary schools in the area.

Outreach Coordinator Megan Kelly says she’s been working on virtual or take-home projects during the pandemic, but she’s hopeful to be in classrooms working with students on vital subjects.

We’re really looking into STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics] activities and just agriculture literacy to the elementary on up levels. We want to implement that and put a strong emphasis on how important agriculture is.”

Since joining Guthrie County Farm Bureau in October, Kelly is looking forward to this program the most.

“I have a lot of confidence that things are going to turn around and we’ll be able to start getting back to a little bit of normalcy here and I have great confidence that the Ag in the Classroom program will take off when we’re able to do those things.”

The program will initially target the elementary grades before building up into the high school. Summer activities are being tentatively planned with the assumption that social distancing and mask standards continue through spring.
