The Stuart City Council approved an amendment to its Urban Renewal Plan with a list of potential revitalization projects for the City in the future.

The projects listed included low to medium income infrastructure improvements and revitalization projects, the Saints Center for Culture and the Arts and a Safe Route to School program. The list is only for potential projects and not necessarily projects the city is actively pursuing.

Matt Aust of Black Swan Developers spoke to the Council via voice conferencing at their most recent meeting Tuesday about securing Tax Increment Financing funds to pursue renovating Hotel Stuart. Aust’s proposal would convert the first floor of the building to commercial space for two businesses and the second floor into five apartments.

The Council approved the request, referring the item to City Bond Attorney John Danos. Specifics on the project could change depending if the project can receive approval for the Community Catalyst Building Remediation grant program through the Iowa Economic Development Authority.
