Perry residents may have seen chains on the three City-owned blue recycling dumpsters.

Public Works Deputy Director Josh Weubker says the dumpsters have chains on them due to items that are not meant for recycling being placed inside the dumpsters. Weubker notes this makes it so the whole load isn’t rejected when it’s hauled away.

“As soon as you dump it in there you can’t pick that out. You can’t crawl into the back of a garbage truck to get that. One solution was we put chains on them.”

Weubker points out that the chains have been effective. Since putting them on, every load as been accepted at the designated recycling center. Weubker notes the chains on the dumpsters is a needed part of being able to keep those dumpsters there for Perry residents to use.

“I know it’s a little inconvenient with the chains on there but in all honesty, if we do remove the chains we are going to be back at square one and everything that you’re trying to do to recycle is going to be right back at the landfill.”

Weubker reminds people to use the recycling dumpsters for what it’s meant to be used for and if the dumpsters are full do not place recyclable items on the ground.
