The First Day Hike Challenge across Iowa wrapped up over the weekend and area residents left footprints in the snow out at Springbrook State Park in Guthrie County.

Park Ranger Rod Nelson and Iowa Department of Natural Resources Training Specialist Anne Riordan are setting up another self-guided course for people to utilize. Riordan says this time, people can use their smartphones to tackle the course and earn a bit of fireside rest and relaxation.

“It’s not going to be horribly exhausting, just adventurous. People can use their cell phones to put the GPS coordinates in and not need special equipment. I’ll have four or five different waypoints that I’ll set up and each one, there will be something that they’ll need to build their fire. The last waypoint will take them to the Civilian Conservation Corps Shelter where there’s a really nice fireplace to sit, relax and enjoy the evening.”

Riordan is hoping to have the course ready for participants by next week. For more information, contact Springbrook State Park.
