The Greene County Jail continues to be at or near capacity in 2020.

Sheriff Jack Williams shared the 2020 jail report with the County Board of Supervisors at their meeting Monday. He said a total of 452 inmates were booked into the county jail. Of those, 434 were county inmates and another 18 were from out of county. Williams said about 15-20 county inmates were held in other jail facilities. July had the highest number of inmates with 52 and November was the lowest month with 17.

Williams told the Supervisors they can hold as many as ten inmates at one time at the law enforcement center, but they have had to transport some inmates to neighboring county jail facilities. When that happens, Williams noted it costs the County additional funds. He used the example of sending an inmate to the Boone County Jail is $38 per day per inmate. However, when other counties transport their inmates to be held in the Greene County Jail, Williams said the County is reimbursed those expenses.

Additionally, Williams pointed out there are 74 people waiting to serve their jail sentences and there are 103 outstanding arrest warrants for suspects that have yet to be arrested and booked into jail.

Williams thought that a new jail with 20 beds would reduce the amount of money the County is paying to have inmates to go to other facilities, as well as cutting down the number of people waiting to serve their sentences.
