The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has brought with it many changes, not all of them good, but some changes have been beneficial as it relates to the Iowa Legislative Session.

State Senator for District 10 Jake Chapman says the pandemic has allowed for a more inclusive session as it relates to the public being able to participate in what lawmakers are doing at the Capitol.

“There is going to be far more opportunity for the public to be engaged in the political process probably than ever before. We have technology now, this legislative session, that will allow the public to engage in the sub-committee process.”

Chapman explains when a bill is introduced it goes in front of a sub-committee of either three senators or three house members where a hearing is conducted.

“That typically has not been aired or televised or anything like that in the past. This year there will be a virtual component to that where the public can engage. So, from the comfort of their home or wherever it may be. That will be I think a tremendous thing for Iowans.”

Chapman says the main focus is having a safe session but also being more transparent.
