Jefferson’s newest business is one of the first for an idea that got its start in the Des Moines metro area.

Gravitate is a coworking business that allows remote workers, freelancers, and entrepreneurs a space to do their work in a more professional setting. Owner Geoff Wood says the business started in 2013 and now includes two locations, with one in Des Moines and the other in Windsor Heights. Wood points out about two years ago, a committee with Greene County Vision 2020 and local developer Chris Deal, asked if he would locate his business in Jefferson. Wood explains the other reasons why he chose Jefferson as his third location.

“This community is forward thinking with that project (Vision 2020). I think the City (of Jefferson) has been particularly forward thinking with kind of saving the downtown buildings. It just kind of all fell together. Because of the hard work of people like Chris (Deal) and the City like it was something that we didn’t really think we could say no to as we looked at like what could coworking look like in a rural setting.”

Wood says all membership levels include 24/7 access to the building, internet, access to the locations in the Des Moines metro area, mailing address, beverages like coffee and tea, business printing and copying. There is a green section that is a “floating” membership for $100 per month that you can have a workspace for the day but can take everything with you. The red section is a “dedicated” membership of $225 per month that allows you to leave work items at your workspace. Wood notes there are two separate office spaces, along with a conference room and daily rates. He adds that members will have an access code to use the building whenever they need it.

Deal believes places like Gravitate are needed now because of the pandemic and forcing some people to work remotely.

“We all want to get through COVID, we all want to get through the pandemic, absolutely. The silver lining here is that a community like Jefferson has a lot of opportunity because of that. Remote work is, remote work is here to stay. We have a community that has incredible number of positives that we use to attract people here.”
