Road crews are hard at work trying to keep up clearing the roads from Monday’s winter storm.

According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, travel is not advised on most of the state roads in Dallas and Guthrie counties. Tow services are also not recommended for Dallas County. Greene County Engineer Wade Weiss says Secondary Roads Department plow trucks are on the paved county roads and are applying sand and salt to the critical areas in the county, including intersections and those intersections with railroad tracks, along with hills. The county motor graders will be out at 6am on the gravel roads. Weiss anticipates being out until 5pm today and then again for the next two days.

Jefferson Public Works Director Dave Morlan tells Raccoon Valley Radio city crews have been out since 12:30am this morning. He says all streets had snow cleared once, but due to more snow, the streets will need to be cleared again. Morlan estimates about 8-9 inches of snow fell in Jefferson. He anticipates having to work another 8-10 hours tonight on the downtown square. He reminds residents that the snow ordinance is still in effect until it stops snowing and the streets have been all cleared from curb to curb. He asks for commercial properties to clear snow from their dumpsters to help the sanitation department pick up garbage.

According to the National Weather Service, snowfall totals ranged between 8-12 inches in Dallas County and 6-10 inches in Guthrie County. A winter storm warning remains in effect until noon for Greene, Dallas and Guthrie counties.
