Kelly Summy the son of Leonard and Leona (Swearingen) Summy was born April 21, 1957 in
Redfield. Kelly was a graduate of Dexfield High School in 1975 and following that, attended
Central College in Pella where he graduated in 1979. While at Central Kelly met a young lady
named Kathleen Koziol this is where their relationship began to blossom. That relationship
turned into a marriage on October 20, 1984 when Kelly was united with Kathleen at St. Mary’s
Catholic Church in Centerville. Kelly worked numerous years for Caseys in De Soto until he
began working for Yellowbook where he worked for almost 20 years. Kelly was very civic-
minded and enjoyed giving back. He was a past member of Desoto Fire and Rescue and
actively involved as a member of the library board and De Soto City Council.
Kelly had numerous passions and hobbies. He was well versed in movies, from murder
mysteries to Marvel action movies, but nothing beat his love for Christmas movies which was
evident from his Dickens’ Christmas movie collection. Kelly also enjoyed going to many different
kinds of plays and shows. Kelly was an amazing chef and enjoyed cooking delectable meals.
He had quite the sense of humor, and was always being a jokester and bringing laughter to
many especially by telling his favorite inside joke about marzipan, “you can eat that, you know?”
Through all of the laughter and smiles, he brought a great sense of care and comfort to his
family and friends, especially his cats, which he loved very much. Kelly was truly loved and will
be greatly missed.
His legacy will continue on in the hearts of his wife, Kathy; step-mother, Barb Summy; step-
brother, Steve (Christine) Foreman; nephews, Christopher Summy, Jeremiah Minshall, Aaron
Becker and Sean Becker and John Holman; nieces, Becky Boston, Lesa Smith, Stephenie
