A vehicle hit a pedestrian and dog Saturday afternoon near DeSoto, leaving the woman injured and killing the dog.

According to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office, a mail carrier vehicle was traveling eastbound in the 22000 block of Maple Ridge around 1 p.m. when it struck a woman walking her dog. The impact killed the dog and the woman was transported to a  hospital by private vehicle with minor injuries.

Sergeant Brent Behnken of the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office says the vehicle was coming around a curve and the driver didn’t see the pedestrian. He adds  there was no indication that the vehicle was driving too fast and that postal vehicles have their driver in the right-hand side of the vehicle. The names of the those involved and the extent of the pedestrian’s injuries are unknown at this time.

The Iowa State Patrol, DeSoto First Responders, Van Meter Volunteer Fire Department and Dallas County Emergency Medical Services also were on scene.
