With the coronavirus pandemic making life difficult for all students, Iowa House Representative for District 19 Carter Nordman says colleges shouldn’t restrict students while they aren’t on campus.

Nordman says legislators were questioning if colleges were overstepping their authority when students stepped off campus as it relates to social distancing measures such as wearing a mask.

“The universities have their authority on their campus to mandate the mask to ensure social distancing and as I have said throughout this entire pandemic I believe everyone should take personal responsibility, wear a mask when you can, socially distance when you can but to have repercussions for a student who could be supporting a local business or whatever they might be doing at their university that they are paying tens of thousands of dollars to attend is overbearing and just not right.”

Nordman says they have spoken with universities and hopes they will not need to do anything further with the issue as Nordman notes the bill isn’t moving forward at this time.
