Class 2A schools are on the Wells Fargo Arena mats for the quarterfinal round of the Iowa High School Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines. There were five area athletes in the quarterfinals and others in the second consolation round. Also in the this session will be the 1A semifinals and third consolation round. The area has no 1A wrestlers in the semis and two in the third consolation round.
Four the five won their 2A quarterfinal matches including teh two undefeated individuals from our area, but in much different fashion. Greene County sophomore McKinley Robbins improved to 32-0 this season with a 2-1 tie-breaker 1 victory over Jonathon Burnette of Spirit Lake Park. Wyatt Appleseth of Panorama is 45-0 after a 13-2 major decision over Gabriel Christensen of Ballard. Winterset won two of their three quarterfinals with Tyler Brown at 152 winning by fall in 3:17 over Zander Ernst of Ridge View, and Riley Hoven at 182 winning a 9-1 major decision over North Fayette Valley’s Kale Rogers. Keegan Jensen of Winterset lost by fall in :25 to top seed Brandon O’Brien of Independence, and Jensen drops into the consolation second round. Second consolation round losses result in elimination from the tournament.
