Remaining composed and confident in stressful situations is helpful throughout life, including in the athletic arena. Greene County High School head wrestling coach Zach Beekman talked with Raccoon Valley Radio about how McKinley Robbins used those traits to his advantage late last week in winning the Class 2A 120 lbs. State title. “He’s always so composed. You can never really tell if he’s nervous or gets anxious or any of that, and I think that comes through. He’s able to stay collected during matches, and he’s got so much confidence in his ability to get something done.”

Robbins capped a 34-0 season with a 4-0 week at State. He won 9-4 in the opening round, took a 2-1 overtime decision in tie-breaker 1 in the quarterfinals, used a takedown to break a 2-2 tie in the third period of his semifinal to win 4-2, and trailed briefly in the third period of the championship match before winning 7-5. He’s the first State Champion in wrestling for the Rams in 27 years and the first in the nine years the Rams have competed as Greene County. The sophomore was the 106 lbs. State runner-up in 2020 and he’s put together a 71-2 career mark in his first two years of high school.
