Law enforcement across the country have joined together in asking the Biden Administration to secure the southern border with Mexico.

Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams recently signed a letter, along with 270 sheriffs across the country, asking for border security, as his main issue being drug-related.

“Ninety-nine percent of the methamphetamines, the heroin that we seize here in Greene County originate from Mexico. And right now if you have 1,700 people crossing in different locations on the border, probably 50 of them are transporting drugs and bringing it into our country. Which affects everything because most drug users steal and burglarize to help aid in their drug habit.”

Williams notes this has been an ongoing issue and it only gets worse without increasing border patrol or finishing the wall on the southern border, which he points out doesn’t completely solve the problem, but it would reduce the amount of drugs coming across the border and getting into Greene County.

“That’s a problem for me because it affects every one of our citizens here. Because when a criminal gets busted with stolen property or not, it’s usually a drug user. And then the courts, inturn, the judges let the criminal off with probation, jail time, even prison sentences, which is fine, but the victim who had their stuff stolen will very rarely ever see the money to replace that stuff.”

Williams says if the border were more secured, the amount of drugs will be reduced to such that the market for items like meth goes up, making it harder to make it be as sustainable as it currently is. He doesn’t believe by signing a letter for the Biden Administration it will do any good, but at least they are voicing their concerns to the White House in Washington, D.C.
