A new venture in Jefferson is aiming to connect high school students with local businesses to promote what they have to offer.

The Social Media Marketing Internship Program is a partnership between Jefferson Matters: A Main Street and Chamber Community, Greene County High School, Greene County Development Corporation, Retail Revamped and Chatterkick. This program involves three high school seniors, including Alex Roberts, Makala Kafer and Lillian Muir as paid interns who are working with six downtown Jefferson businesses, including Meythaler Photography, Junkyard Cafe, Sensibly Chic, Fudge’s Flowers and Gifts, Art on the Fly and the Stitch.

Roberts talked to the Greene County School Board at their meeting last week about the goals of the program.

“Essentially what we’re supposed to be doing is creating content, and advertising, and different things like that to put out onto all of the social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and everything. Because nowadays people, they want to contact the younger generation to come into their stores and buy their products and stuff. The best way to do that is through those social media platforms.”

Jefferson Matters also received a $10,863 grant from the Greene County Community Foundation for equipment such as iPads and computers for the students and businesses to use. GCDC provided the matching funds for the grant. The program will start May 3rd with the students to work with the businesses for two hours per week for three months.
