As the season continues to change and farm equipment makes its way out onto the road there are ways to keep everyone safe.

Van Wall Owner Don Van Houweling says farm equipment needs most of a gravel road to get from one place to another and on a regular highway, farm equipment may need the shoulder and all of their lane, and Van Houweling says it’s easy to spot the equipment.

“The equipment today is equipped with a myriad of flashing lights and placards so that it’s very clear when you’re coming up to a(n) agricultural piece of equipment. But let’s be very conscious of the fact of how wide it’s going to be.”

Van Houweling tells Raccoon Valley Radio one thing to remember when following farm equipment is there may not be an opportunity to pass for some time and he asks people to remember to be patient.

“We ask you to be patient because they do need to be that wide to move from place to place. It may be a big sprayer, it may be a piece of equipment behind, it could be a planter. So, watch for the flashing lights but be patient.”

Van Houweling says farmers may sometimes pull off into farm drives in order to let traffic go around them.
