For the fourth time in as many meetings since 2019, Greene County lost to Regina Catholic in the Class 1A State Boys Soccer Tournament in Des Moines at the Cownie Soccer Complex. The Rams were shut out 3-0 on Tuesday and finished 14-7 while the Regals move on to Thursday’s semifinal with a 12-7 record. The first three meetings between the Rams and Regals were each decided by one goal.

On Tuesday, the Regals scored just 5-1/2 minutes into the contest on a goal by Kaleab Wendy. With 7:17 to play in the first half the Regals made it 2-0 on a Trent Gerard goal. Just 52 seconds into the second half, Alec Wick, the Regals’ leading scorer, put his 30th goal of the season into the net. Although no further scoring took place, both teams had opportunities for goals.

Greene County head coach Carl Behne told Raccoon Valley Radio he thought Regina played better than when the Rams lost to them 1-0 on May 11 at the Nevada Tournament. “I think they played better and I don’t think we played as well as the first time. I’m so proud of our guys for overcoming the broken leg Luis (Velazco) suffered early in the season to make it here and for all they accomplished.”

Greene County returns a solid nucleus of players for 2022.
