As families and local school districts prepare for the upcoming school year, what happens in the coming month could determine what that school year might look like.

Dallas County Health Department Public Information Officer Ann Cochran talks about some of the possibilities in terms of social distancing measures and other factors with COVID-19.

“This is a tricky issue. Some of it depends on what happens between now and the end of August. Especially with lots of vacation traveling and the Iowa State Fair, we could very well see a spike in the number of cases locally.”

Cochran tells Raccoon Valley Radio there are ways families and students can protect themselves including becoming vaccinated for all those who are 12-years-old and over. Cochran describes another way students can protect themselves.

“For students under age 12 who can’t be vaccinated their parents can have them wear a mask.”

Cochran warns that school districts in areas with low vaccination rates could see an increase in COVID-19 infections when school starts back up in August. Cochran encourages everyone who can be vaccinated to do so.
