Greene County sent its volleyball teams to Jewell for a Heart of Iowa Activities Conference match vs. South Hamilton on Thursday, while the cross-country runners were in the Panorama Invitational at the Par 3 Golf Course west of Panora.

Coach Chris Heisterkamp’s volleyball team was looking for a conference road win for the first time since 2019 and the Rams got it as they won in straight sets by scores of 25-22, 25-18, 25-9. Greene County improves to 2-1 in the conference and 8-4 overall and the eight wins matches the victory total from all of last year. SH fell to 10-12 on the season and this was the Hawks first HOIAC match.

SH led set one 22-21 before the Rams scored the last four points for the victory. Set two saw the Rams go on a six-point run late in the set, and the third set was dominated by Greene County as the Rams led by as many as 17 points. The Rams had six ace serves in the third set alone with two by Alexa Peters, two by Violet Reedy, and one each for Gracie Cooklin and Natalie Heupel.

Coach Jeff Lamoureux’s boys’ cross-country team finished in seventh place among 14 teams. The Coach reports Noah Hinote missed the meet due to illness and he’s been the number two or three runner on the team. Others ran, but didn’t feel well, so considering the illness factor, the coach thought the team did well in a large field with a number of highly regarded teams and individuals.

Freshman Gavyn Winters led the way for the Rams by finishing 35th in 20:00 for the five kilometers (3.1 miles) with Jayden Carstensen 38th in 20:09, Logan Woodruff 44th in 20:19, Ethan Frederick 54th in 21:12, and Kolby Angell 61st in 21:56.

The Rams don’t have enough girls out to qualify for a team score. Olivia Shannon was 57th in 26:37 and Autumn Stevens was 109th in 32:52.
