The 2021-22 high school wrestling season may be the most anticipated in the 10 years as Greene County. The Rams open the season with three dual meets in Van Meter starting tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. Coach Zach Beekman’s Rams will take on the host VM Bulldogs, the Ogden Bulldogs, and the PCM (Monroe) Mustangs.

Back is 2021 State Champion McKinley Robbins and two others with State meet experience. Gavin Scheuermann is a sophomore who became one of a handful of Ram ninth graders to evr qualify for State when he did so last Feb. Brenner Gallagher was a top 12 finisher at the 2020 State Tournament. Also back are other District qualifiers from last season. Another 2021 State Champion in the Greene County room is Kale Petersen, a transfer student from West Fork (Sheffield), who won the 1A 106 lbs. title. Petersen isn’t eligible yet due to transfer rules.

Coach Beekman was asked about the opening night lineup and how many of the 14 weight classes he thought would be filled. “We’re going to try and wrestle as many as we can and that’s always the goal. It’ll kind of depend of our weight certification and where kids fall. Some of them may have to cut down a little bit, so that could take a couple of weeks or so before they get down to the weight they want to wrestle at. The first couple of competitions it’s kind of fill as many as you can with who you have.”
