Maintainer at Greene Co Secondary Roads Shop

With the possibility of snow in the forecast this week, the Greene County Secondary Roads Department is prepared and ready.

County Engineer Wade Weiss tells Raccoon Valley Radio their 12 plow trucks and 12 maintainer fleet have had their equipment switched over and melting materials are ready to go for this upcoming winter season.

“We’ve got our sand and salt mix prepared and stored in all of the locations around the county and in our Jefferson facility. We’ve got our trucks outfitted and we’re outfitting the maintainers with their snow removal equipment. We’re very fortunate we haven’t had snow yet, but if it happens, we are ready.”

Weiss says following a snow event, the 12 plow trucks will primarily treat the over 200 miles of paved county roads, while the maintainers will take care of the over 800 miles of gravel roads. He talks about what areas of the county will get sand and salt applied first.

“We’ll go out and treat critical areas. We kind of wait until the snow is over to put centerline material down. But railroad tracks, stop signs, bridges, we’re constantly applying material to create a safe situation there.”

Weiss adds the Secondary Roads crews will typically work 5am to 5pm following a snow event to clear the roads.
