As the coronavirus pandemic continues on and new variants emerge, researchers are continuing to learn more about the virus.

The new Omicron variant of COVID-19 is becoming more prevalent in communities, and Dallas County Health Department Public Information Officer Ann Cochran explains what researchers have found out about the virus.

“The most important findings are that it’s a very, very contagious disease, which makes wearing masks a great idea right now. Reports from many healthcare centers across the country indicate persons with the Omicron variant are less likely than those with Delta variant to have severe symptoms.”

Cochran tells Raccoon Valley Radio being vaccinated is still the best way to protect yourself against the coronavirus and it’s variants. Cochran says for those who are vaccinated they have better outcomes if they become infected.

“In cases of breakthrough infections for Omicron the people who are vaccinated are much less likely to be hospitalized.”
