The Greene County soccer teams began play last night in cloudy conditions with strong winds and temperatures in the 40’s. Both varsity matches began at 5:30 p.m.

The boys played at Boone and opened with a 2-1 overtime victory. The game winner was scored with just 36 seconds left in the 10 minute sudden victory period by sophomore Nathan Behne on a free kick. The Rams scored a goal when Behne found junior Jose Velazco with 14:03 to play in the first half. Coach Carl Behne’s team put nearly constant pressure on the Boone defense, but managed only two goals in nearly 130 minutes. Shots hit the crossbar and the side poles, and were just a bit wide or high, but the Boone goalkeeper also had several saves. Boone’s goal came with 19 minutes left in regulation on what looked like a routine shot from well outside the box. Now and then in baseball a run-of-the-mill ground ball goes through an infielder’s legs and that was the case on Boone’s goal.

The girls were at home in Grand Junction and lost to Grand View Christian (Des Moines) by a 2-0 score. Coach Maribel Hernandez told Raccoon Valley Radio she felt the Rams played well. She reported Esther Van Horn had the lone shot on goal for the Rams. “I thought we played pretty well and our defense did well vs. a pretty good team,” the coach added.
