An important issue for Governor Kim Reynolds that did not get resolved before the end of this year’s legislative session is believed by one lawmaker to have possible repercussions in next week’s primary election.

District 24 Senator Jesse Green of Boone says the Senate passed the governor’s proposal of school choice that would’ve allowed some students the ability to use state allocated funds for private education. He adds, another component that was tied to school choice was transparency and forcing teachers to publish their lesson plans online for parents to see. Green shares his final thoughts on school vouchers stalling out at the end of the session.

“In my mind, I take a Libertarian point of view, at the end of the day when you have real universal school choice, that is going to solve the other issues of potential bad apple teachers teaching things that they shouldn’t be teaching, and of course we have school boards as well.”

Green feels that because some Republican lawmakers in the House that didn’t support the governor’s plan have seen the governor give endorsements to other Republican candidates that are running against them in next week’s primary election.

“The governor has been very clear of what she’s passionate about. And I think it’s very natural that she wants to have people that are passionate about those same issues in the legislature as well. I think she’s being very calculated in how she is going out and backing some of these candidates.”

While Green was disappointed that school vouchers and other topics didn’t get through this session, he believes that in future sessions, something will get passed and signed into law. Green’s newly re-districted senate seat is not up for election this year.
