A Greene County resident is a recipient of an award for her agricultural conservation practices.

Chris Henning of Cooper was selected to receive the Practical Farmers of Iowa Farmland Owner Legacy Award. This award is given annually to landowners who use their land to get the next generation of farmers started, advance land stewardship and promote long-term sustainability of farm businesses, environmental quality and rural communities.

A free Field Day program, along with a meal and award ceremony will take place Friday, June 24th from 5-8pm on Henning’s farm at 1931 Q Avenue, about eight miles southeast of Jefferson. Henning will talk about her role as a landowner as it relates to farmland stewardship in conserving natural resources. She will also discuss how she works with her tenant to collaborate on management decisions and practices like cover crops. Finally, Henning will share how she’s used soil sampling and principles of precision agriculture to enhance productivity, soil health, and limit chemical use and tillage to restore its natural habitat.

RSVPs for the meal are encouraged by tomorrow by clicking the link below or contact Debra Boekholder at 515-232-5661.
