The City of Jefferson employees recently saw an increase in pay.

The City Council approved at their July 27th meeting a request from the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Iowa Council 61 for a one time adjustment in wages of 2.75-percent to the police officers who are a part of the union, along with a three-percent raise for all other union municipal employees. City Administrator Mike Palmer says the request was made due to the high inflation rates.

“In exchange, what the City received was on their (the union’s ) contract, the last two years of the contract were open for wages (negotiations) those are locked into a three-percent increase.”

Palmer notes that the Council also approved a one-time increase for all non-union municipal employees of two-percent.

“Typically the non-union, which consists mainly of supervisory (positions) gets up to a four-percent increase every year. So that additional two(-percent) brings it up to six(-percent) that’s equal to what the union got.”

Additionally, the Council also approved increasing Palmer’s wages for the rest of this year to another two-percent on top of the four-percent raise he just received. Palmer adds the one-time wage adjustments started August 1st.
