Following Iowa’s redistricting, one new county that is joining the third congressional district had a visit Thursday afternoon from an elected official.

Congresswoman Cindy Axne spent the majority of the day in Jefferson, including holding a town hall meet and greet event at Greene Bean Coffee. She told the capacity crowd that she was designated as the more bipartisan member of Iowa’s congressional delegation two years in a row. She spent most of the time talking about the recently passed and signed into law by President Joe Biden the Inflation Reduction Act. 

Axne pointed out what she thought was the main part of the bill was the ability to negotiate prices on the most expensive prescription medications for people who are on Medicare. She said it would be a phase in process with a few prescription drugs every year for four years starting with capping insulin costs at $35 per month. She also said the bill would extend coverage for those needing Affordable Care Act and limit the amount of out of pocket maximum for Medicare individuals to $2,000 annually. 

Axne added the other major parts of the bill would issue tax rebates for solar and wind energy projects, along with making corporations pay a minimum of 15-percent tax and hiring more IRS agents to conduct audits and increase taxes for those who make more than $400,000. She then fielded a few questions from the audience. 

Axne started her day in Jefferson with lunch at The Centennial, then following the town hall meeting, she visited the top of the Mahanay Memorial Carillon Tower. She also visited with community members with Jefferson Matters and Jefferson city officials. Axne is running her for third term in the US House against her Republican challenger Zach Nunn.
