Some new legislation coming through the Iowa House of Representatives has some people asking questions.

Iowa House Representative for District 23 Ray Sorensen says that House File 3 would introduce some changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio some of what is included in the bill.

“The intent of House File 3 is to ensure that Iowa’s welfare programs are sustainable, that they remain available for the Iowans that truly need it. It does it through a variety of means, including codifying practices to authenticate the identity of applicants and then verify the information prior to their enrollment.”

Sorensen mentions that he has heard some concerns about the bill, but wants to assure constituents that the bill wouldn’t take anyone off of these programs, and the change to the food list only takes things that are unhealthy like pop and candy off the list of items that are covered. The bill is still in the House.
